A rather special exhibition is currently on show at Space2B Social Design at 144 Chapel St, St Kilda. Curated by Violet Browne of St Kilda Art Tours, The Symbiotic Connections group exhibition features the brilliant works of five incredible local artists.
‘Symbiotic Connections’ was chosen as a suitable title because of the synergies that exist between the artists and their art works. All have nature, mother earth or the ocean woven together as a theme at their core, and are therefore complementary.
Featured Indigenous artist Stan Yarramunua – Internationally acclaimed artist, musician, published author and owner of Art Yarramunua gallery in Acland St, gave guests at the launch a heartfelt talk about the importance of community and congratulated Space2B on their fantastic space and the great work they do, particularly in supporting multi-cultural women and artists who are looking for a functional and affordable local gallery to showcase their work. He then played the didgeridoo which was both moving and haunting simultaneously.
Excited by her first ever gallery exhibition, Melbourne passionate mixed media feature artist and story-teller, Alexandra Calamel is exhibiting a series of triptychs as well as stunning mixed media pieces.
Other artists include Kate Karaula, textile artist extraordinaire; Salvatori Lolicato, prolific local sculpture and 2nd place winner in the recent Veg Out ‘Big Sculpture’ exhibition and Selva Veeriah – contemporary local abstract artist.
Space2b is an art and design social enterprise. It has been established to support people seeking asylum, refugees and newly arrived migrants to become financially independent. This is achieved through creative enterprise, workplace training and business mentoring.
